I am a popcorn nut and if you've read this blog from the beginning, you know I have every kind of popper imaginable. Well, I saw this Poptop Popcorn Popper in a catalogue (Lee Valley) and was intrigued. I do use packaged micro popcorn but am never happy to read all the additives they contain. This popper is made of silicone and no oil is required. Air poppers are healthy but shoot the kernels all over the place but this one has a folding top to keep them in and then opens up to reveal all the beautiful popcorn.
I found it at a specialty kitchen store and saved the shipping costs. I couldn't wait to get home and try it out. It takes 5 tbsp of kernels but there's no need to measure because there is a little reservoir in the bottom that holds the right amount. It isn't necessary to add any oil at all but you can if you want to add flavour. I prefer that I can measure out the smallest amount (I added one teaspoon) and can control the calories. It takes 2-3 minutes to fill the bowl (it says about 10 cups but I didn't measure. There is plenty for two people but it's so good I didn't have any trouble eating all of it!).
The popper is dishwasher safe and is pretty small to store. When folded it measures 6" wide and 4" tall. It feels very durable and well made. I love this popper and can't wait to make a batch for our movie night this evening! It costs about $30 so is a bit of an investment but that only adds up to 5 boxes or so of microwave popcorn.
